Poland is still my team, and despite their performance Sunday, I think they can and will beat Austria. Austria is in this for one reason and one reason only: Host Nation. It means they get to play ONLY because the tournament is in their country and not because the EARNED their way into the tornament!!!!!

1.)Podolski. The guy scored both goals against the country of his birth to seal the win for Germany. Although he should be ashamed playing for germany given his family heritage he is a hell of a baller and will not be restrained against Croatia.

It's been a while since I made a winning pick on European Football and this Sunday we have the mother of all re-matches when Poland (my team) faces the evil germans in the opening round of Euro 2008. You can go to this link for more on why Germany Sucks. Unfortunately, Poland lost against germany but only after valiently battling an overmatched German Squad and down Radoslaw Sobolewski who was sent off late for two bookable offences. The Polish Keeper Boruc faced down a relentless onslaught until finally yielding the winning goal in stoppage time. Chicago and Warsaw were devasted. (as documented, I had Poland +1 so we pushed-Heartbroken-Yes; Broke-No)

Now this Sunday Poland has the opportunity to redeem themselves and beat their Arch-Nemesis for the first time since 1933. 6 year before Hitler and his bastards attacked us without provocation!

'We are aware of this record and we are reasonably confident we can finally beat Germany,' said Polish coach Beenhakker. 'A win would really put wind in our sails although it's too early to tell how far we can go in the tournament.'

Poland is listed at +550 and I think given the history for the squad going back to their defeat in the world cup, the national pride, and the fact that they are due; Poland will win this match!

It's been a while since I have had anything worth writing about or, or for that matter to bet on! But with the 2008 UEFA Euro Championship less than a month away I am once again attempting to get excited about my adopted second favorite sport---Football, European style.

Now, I know its very easy for us Americans to get snarky about "soccer" especially when the Euro's vote there mascots to be named TRIX and FLIX and make them look like man-loving Japanase anime-but give it a shot- it's really not that bad. Trust me.

Here is what, for me, is cool about European Football--from a big picture view. Football is global. The whole world, sans the USA , has a respectible league and has genuine national pride in their squads. The UEFA Championship essentially pits the national team, made up of their league stars, and has a tournament to see who is the best team in Europe. It's huge and there is legitimate national pride on the line.

From a more basic perspective, there is a lot of strategy in football, and if you can get past the low scoring you can appreciate how hard it is to score a goal and how critical it is to capitalize on ever legitimate opportunity. On a scale of boredom, with one being "very boring" and ten being "very exciting", I give it a solid 7, with Basketball and 8 and baseball a 5.

But one thing that can make anything exciting is wagering! And like Americans, the Euro's love to wager on sports. My goal is to provide picks for the tournament and hopefully generate some interest in the sport.

One of the biggest problems american bettors have had is that part of the enjoyment of betting on any sporting event is the excitment of bellying p to the bar, ordering an Ice Cold Piwa (Beer) and watching the action unfold live. Luckily for us the 2008 Euro Championship is being carried live on ESPN this year---and better yet the times are not at 9:00 am!

Here are my selections:

Giant +12 over the Pats (1000 dawg bones): Patriots win this game and fly off into the sunset to an undefeated season. Proving once and for all that they are the greatest football team in the history of Professional football teams. They only thing is, they don't do it by 12 points. I remember the Patriots vs. the Rams, when the Patriots were getting 16 points to a heavily favored Kurt Warner team. Vegas lost it's ass. Quite frankly, I'm shocked the spread this high today. I was expecting more like an 11 9-11 point spread. Since this is the big game, I anticipate 1. The Giants stepping up because they don't give a fuck and have nothing to lose.... and 2. The Patriots having some nerves as they are on the verge of making history. This will be a boring Superbowl.

However, the Patriots will win and make history. So finally, the 72 Miami dolphins can shut the fuck up, and die already. Nobody gave a shit about you motherfuckers anyway. Don Shula and Bob Griese are the only guys from that team that can still pay their mortgage. Die already, you old fuckers.

The Aldawg is also going with an UNDER bet today, as I expect this to be a low scorer.

Aldawg has been on my rear due to the lack of reporting. Well Aldawg, here it is the final report card before a winner is announced. I see why you are so anxious.........

Just like Final Jeopordy the three remaining cappers not only have to win but hope their opponents fail to bet enough to take them out.

The Aldawg can taste back to back records, and the self-adulation and masturbation we will be subject to is enough to make me cringe if he pulls it off.

Joe Casciato has been on fire since almost flaming out early on. The run has been incredible but the competition at the journal is tough and like years past it can all come down to one game.

As it stands, Dilly could go for it and be the first capper in SCJ history to win both prizes. Or he could lay it up and simply collect his 200 bucks and let shadow and the dawg battle it out.

As a reminder, the final pot of $400 is split between Most Points and Best Record.

Championship Sunday..... There is a brisk chill in the air. Turkeys are done. It's fucking cold in both locations and that is going to have an impact on both of these games today.

Chargers +14.5 over Patriots (1000 dawg bones). Patriots win this game and ride off toward the history books. They have proved time and time again, however, that they cannot cover the points in the big games. Everybody is hyping the weather in Green Bay, rightly so, but it is going to be colder than sombitch in Boston today too. That being said, the Aldawg is taking the Chargers to cover these points today. I love how this line moved too. Everybody is taking the Patriots, which is even more reason to take a step back and think about it.

Green Bay Packers -7.5 over the Giants (1000 dawg bones). Everybody thinks New York gets cold, therefore the Giants should have no problem playing in this weather. BULLSHIT. I live on the East coast, not too far from New York, and let me tell you.... it doesn't get that cold here. At least it hasn't since Eli was born. The Giants peaked last week. They are out of their element and should not even be in this game. The only offensive weapon they have is Jacobs (SIU ALUM). I've said before... Eli would rather watch TV than be playing a game... that came out this week when the city of Green Bay cancelled the Seinfeld reruns on his ass. Giants show up today, and then look like fucking chumps. This will be sloppy games because of the cold, and Packers ride off to the Superbowl, to make a 96 rematch. It will be old school vs. young guns. I'm already looking forward to it.

Is there still a competition going on here? I couldn't tell since Rob is out of it. Nothing gets updated anymore. My third prediction: SJC is dead after Superbowl.

My picks this weekend are going to be HUGE!!!!!!!

But first let me see congrats to the leaders of the competition, Enzo, Aldawg, Dilly, and Joe Casciato. May the best prognosticator win.

Now, let me say this. I have internaly battled the idea of making some large 1000pt picks this season but have decided to resist' even though I knew it would mean a certain loss in the competition. The fact of the matter is this: If I wouldn't put ten percent of my bankroll on it, then why should I put 10% of my points on it? So, I am resigned to the fact of finishing of the year in the black, albeit not as much as a profit as years past. Bottom Line: This was a bad year for the Robnosticator.... I am at .500.

Now for my big picks.

The Pats face their toughest test this season. As far as I am concerned, New England has been suspect at best, against decent teams. There margin of victory against winning teams is not as impressive as their record setting scoring total would indicate.

The Patriots have also not impressed me with their run defense. Del Rio knows that to keep the game close he needs to keep Brady and Moss on the side lines. Fred Taylor is the answer and potentialy the reason the fairytale turns into a nightmare this evening.

This could be the upset america has been waiting for. Lets be safe and take the points anyway.

Speaking of points....... that Romo has got a nice set to play with here. This is a classic playoff weekend when the spreads are just too high. There is too much tension in the air for these kinds of spreads. Holmgren is going home.... driving down Holmgren way I might add, and is a 7.5 point dog? Colt giving up 9.5 points on a weekend where they are NOTORIOUS for choking? Patriots still have the perfect season monkey on their backs, and are favored by 13.5??? And Dallassss. Tony Romo is wisking off to Cancun to get some Dallasss and his mind is not on football. His mind is on getting as much poon as he can before this fairtale comes to a crashing halt.

0-2 on Staurday. Looked like an easy 2-0 in both 4th quarters but then Collins has 2 picks returned for TD's and the Steelers score 19 4th quarter points. Oh well onward to this afternoon.

Tennesse is solid on both sides of the ball. Look for Vince Young to play ball control and eat clock throughout the first half. The scoring will pick up in the second half just like both games on Saturday.

Why I Love Football

Playoffs. Where the men separate themselves from the boys, and the gamblers flock to the bank. If you are following the Aldawg, that is. Having gone two for two yesterday, I'm looking to complete my third perfect week in the last four. My in depth analysis, has led me to the following conclusions. It is better to be a tight end than a wide receiver. The tight ends in this picture will eventually end up wide receivers... they all do.

Here are my picks:

I am never comfortable betting on Eli Manning. I just don't have faith betting on a guy that has talent, but no desire to win. It is obvious to me that Archie Manning spent more time with the crippled kid and Peyton during their youth. Once the cripple kid couldn't play anymore, he focused on Peyton. Eli just picked up the scraps. Nothing wrong with that. It landed him a job in the NFL. However, Eli never picked up the desire to win. You can see it in face during a game. He is out there collecting a check, and can't wait to get home to watch the Amazing Race on Tivo. When you take this fact, a couple it with the NY Giants having no WRs worth a shit, they are a risky bet. Shockey is out.... Toomer has a toomer and is playing like shit, and Burress is a 2nd rate receiver at best. The only guy on offence that is worth a shit is fellow SIU alumni, Brandon Jacobs.

So then you look to the other team. The Bucaneers. Son of Chucky coaching his football team, led by the NFL's only homo QB Jeff Garcia. The only way to approach this game is with the OVER/UNDER, and the Aldawg is rolling with the OVER since it is the playoffs.

Game Two - Tennessee vs. the Chargers. If Marty Shottenheimer was still coaching the Chargers, I would be all over the Titans. He couldn't win a playoff game if his life depended on it. However, it is a different era in San Diego. They have overcome the the coaching changes and actually made a season out of it. This would have been a great game if Vince Young were playing. This turns into a shit game. I like the under in this game for a couple of reason. Titans will not be scoring that much... and their Defense is one of the better defenses in the league. If the Chargers get up by much, they will pull their players. Stay away from the points.

NFL Wild Card Weekend Playoff Picks

Great Blog Content can be hard to come up with at times. But, since I understand our target demographic, I feel that two scantily clad women, one holding a football, the other a set of plump gazombas, will suffice for any witty repertoire I may provide. (Thanks Aldawg for the inspiration)

Playoff Picks:

Gruden is a roided-up doofus. I hope he loses. I'll take the Giants every single day of the week getting three.

The Titans play in the toughest division in the NFL---The AFC South!!!!!!. Three teams from the division are in the playoffs and even the craptastic Houston Texans were .500 this year. San Diego (which loosely translated means whales vagina) came from a division where they were the only team to have a winning record!!!!! Give me a break; The Bolts are overated and no way do they deserve to be a 10 point favorite.

The Steelers are get more credit due to their storied history than to the reality that they are not that good. Cowher is gone. Roethlisberger is overated.

The Jaguars can pound the ball. Garrard doesn't make mistakes; and Del Rio is an exellent coach. Sorry Joe, but you'll wont be cheering for Pittsburg next week.
