Pardon the shameless promotion of the newest edition to the Bobcat family. His name is Andrew but he rolls by the pseudonym of The Cub here on the Court.

This weekend fixes to be John David Bootyliscious. Let it be known that I beat Stuart Scott to the punch with that one. You heard it here first.

The Court is back in session. And these first few weekends are where the money is made, folks. Spreads are off in the month of September. Remember that. This is the time to make all of the money you will lose in December when the handicappers finally pull their heads out of their asses and give us real lines that challenge us. Check my documented record last year. I started off the year 20-10 before finishing barely above 50%. How does that happen? I get lazy and the handicappers get better at their jobs.

300 Point Lock

Indiana is -7 vs Western Michigan. Indiana covers, no problemo. They are improved and you have to respect the Big 10 in non-conference match ups. The MAC deserves respect but this spread is waaaay too thin.

100 Point Pick

USC -8 at Arkansas. Please. USC covers. John David Booty will impress. He knows the USC system as he has been an understudy for 4 years. Now he gets his chance as a redshirt Junior. People forget that JDB came out of high school a year early because the Leinert/Hassel QB situation at USC was so bleak. It is debatable how close Booty came to beating out Leinart before the latter beat No 6 Auburn on the road in his first start and never looked back. Now it is Booty’s turn. He is good. Good enough to allow the rest of the talent on the USC team to do its thing.

This won’t be the 70-17 blowout we saw last year but the Trojans will cover. USC is not going anywhere. Collegiate programs don’t generally suffer when they lose a few big names. They recruit, recruit, recruit. White, Leinart and Williams have all departed. But the core is still there and Pete Carroll is at the helm. Besides, the Robnosticator is riding Arkansas on this one so USC is surely a lock. Remember folks, Robnosticator is a bad bet barometer with respect to NCAA football. He is more at home betting on Sundays. And that is a documented fact.

100 Point Pick

Wisconsin -10 at Bowling Green

Again, take the Big 10 in spreads less than 17 when opening against fringe opponents.

Akron at Penn State -17

Again, Big 10 rolls in these non-conference openers. 17 points or less and I am all in…

San Jose State +19.5 at Washington

Half of Ty Willingham’s already sub-par, basement dwelling UW squad is out on academic probation. Read the Seattle Times and you won’t find many positive things about this program. UW always plays SJSU in the early goings and they never win by 3 TDs.

California -2.5 at Tennessee

Pac 10 is 6-3 in games against the SEC in the last 5 years. All three of the SEC wins were by LSU. Two of those losses were heartbreaking, last minute meltdowns by OSU and ASU. SEC should be 1 and 7 against the Pac 10. I like any PAC10 vs. SEC matchup.

Washington State +14.5 at Auburn

Vandals + 29.5 at Michigan State

I know my WAC and PAC, so go with me on this one. This is my upset special of the week. And by upset I mean Idaho loses by less than 29.5.

Dennis Erickson, whaaaaaah? When did Dennis Erickson arrive in Moscow, Idaho, you ask? Right before the JUCO thugs and ex-cons began pouring into the Vandal program. I watch the Vandals keep it close with cross-border rivals WSU about every other year. They have a good spread offense and are certainly capable of scoring points. I have been drawn to this bet after reading some good coverage in the Spokesman Review (the official news source for the good people of Washinton’s “Inland Empire”. We all know how Erickson rebuilds programs. JUCO/Convict recruiting. That’s right, bring in the thugs and 25 year old linebackers from South Mariposa County State Junior College. Remember Erickson’s Oregon State team in the Fiesta Bowl vs. ND in 2000? Boo-yah! I think Leveccio was hit about 50 times by some guy that looked like he had already done a tour in the NFL and in prison. I can’t wait to see who Erickson suits up in the coming years. With the Idaho program coming off 6 losing seasons, they will likely allow Erickson to get creative. MSU only returns 6 starters from a crappy Defense that ranked 87th last year. And guess what, daho only knows offense. I like there chances of scoring a few times and keeping it within 4 touchdowns. Idaho plays MSU, Washington State and Oregon State on the road this year. Pretty ballsy for an underachieving WAC team. Let’s not forget where coach John L. Smith came from…he was 32-15 during his tenure as coach at Idaho!
