SEAHAWKS +3 at San Diego

In this third week of the Preseason, starters playing time can extend well into the third quarter. However, Coach Mike Holmgren plans to play his starters for the first half and the first series of the second half. Then he intends to experiment in an effort to ""get the roster right". When I hear "getting the roster right" and the team is on the road, I usually stay away. However, the fact that the Hawks are getting 3 points when playing a Tomlinson-less Chargers led by an unproven 2nd year QB with minimal playing time is too tempting.

San Diego, 9-7 last season, has one of the league's best defensive fronts. Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was the league's defensive rookie of the year in 2005 when he had 10 sacks. I like the matchup in the first half with the high-power Seattle offense getting challenged by a formidable defense. Hasselback and Wallace both looked good last week when the Seahawks blew up the Colts. But when is the last time the Colts showed up in the Preseason. I am beginning to think that the Colts' players only have performance clauses in their contracts from September to December. Their playoff and preseason performances can be tossed into the same 50 gallon drum labeled "ASSWATER". Asswater induced by a large coffee the morning following a long night of drinking and eating rare cuts of steak. That kind of Asswater. But we are talking about San Diego and Seattle so I digress.

I see a lot of this game being played betwee the 20's. And I like Josh Brown's ability to boot balls from 60 yards out in a game where the Hawks are "experimenting" in the second half and getting 3 points. As for this being a road game, it is a 2 hour flight in the same time zone against a lethargic San Diego crowd. People have other things to do in San Diego...

Washington at NEW ENGLAND (-4)

Did anyone see what the Pats did to the Cardinals last week?
The Redskins, meanwhile, will be vying for their initial win of the '06 preseason after dropping consecutive contests to the Bengals (19-3) and Jets (27-14). Brady is Branch-less and seeking his first TD toss of the year. However, Brady has still managed to put up impressive numbers, completing 18-of-24 passes for 173 yards for a passer rating of 94.6. I think I am most impressed with the Pats D which held the Cardinals to a fieldgoal last week. That same Cardinals team put up 23 on the Chicago Bears. And it could only get better. Look for the possible return to the field of defensive end Richard Seymour and strong safety Rodney Harrison. Neither Seymour nor Harrison has played thus far in the preseason due to injury. The status of recent acquisition and former Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau is uncertain for Saturday's contest. And who do they really have to stop? Portis will miss the remainder of the regular season with a dislocated shoulder. Duckett will step in but even with Portis, Washington has rushed for a total of just 114 yards in its first two games of the 2006 preseason, both losses. How quickly can Duckett contribute? This is the NFL, not the sandlot. Brunell (former Washington Husky) needs to be taken out behind the barn and put to rest. When will that guy retire? Go out to the Washington Post and read the headline this morning: "Offense Remains to Be Seen". While it may be that Al Saunders is not showing much of his offense in the Preseason, it my also be that Al Saunders is really a woman.

As for the betting stats,
New England owns a 11-7 advantage in its all-time preseason series with Washington, including a 20-13 triumph in the last such meeting, prior to the 2003 season.
